Deeper Reflection
When the disciples returned from a period of busy, intensive and emotionally draining ministry, Jesus wisely advised them to retreat to somewhere quiet so that they can rest for a while (v.31). But the multitudes of people in need were waiting for them even before they could alight from their boat (vv.33-34)! Ministry needs are never-ending. Even when we are tired and fatigued, there can be many people needing our attention, assistance and ministry. Sometimes we really wish that they would disappear for a while!However, there is one thing that can push us into continued action and to pay attention to others’ needs despite our own. Compassion. Compassion moves us to dig deep into our reserves of energy and resources. Compassion drives us to serve beyond our call of duty. When Jesus saw the crowd and their need for direction, protection and provision, He was filled with deep compassion within Him (v.34). Moved with compassion, Jesus met their needs.Likewise, when we allow compassion to take hold of us, we will be able to focus on others rather than on ourselves. We will have the energy to go that extra mile for a friend in need, the time to pray with a colleague who is going through a rough patch, the joy and strength to nurture a young believer in her spiritual journey, or the perseverance to follow through a volunteer programme that will make a big difference to a young life. May the Lord give us greater compassion for the people around us, so that we can serve them selflessly and show them Jesus.
