Introduction

The well-known parable of Jesus known as the Parable of the Prodigal Son was the answer of Jesus to the murmurings of the Pharisees and teachers of the law that He was welcoming sinners and ate with them (Lk 15:2).

We often focus most on the second son. Some focus on the elder brother. This time, we will focus on the father.

The Story of a Family

When the father is an active believer, there is about a 75% likelihood that the children will also become active believers. But if only the mother is a believer, this likelihood is dramatically reduced to 15% (Keith Meyering, Discipleship Journal, issue #49, p.41).

The absent father is one of the greatest damages in families. The father who loves God is the greatest influence in many people’s lives.

The Father’s Non-Anxious Presence

How can we become a non-anxious presence? By knowing Jesus who is the perfect non-anxious presence in our lives. Cf. the storm in the Sea of Galilee (Lk 8:22-25). He is present in our lives; when we know Him thus, we can reflect His non-anxious presence.

We Can Deduce that He Was a Man Who Prayed with Hope

A praying father is such an important ministry. The prodigal son, at the lowest moment in his life, remembered his father and decided to return to him. How much a father’s influence and input can make a difference in far-away children.

He Was Marked by Generous Love

When the son confessed his sin, he restored the son’s sonship. He was very glad and celebrated his son’s return.

What depth of paternal love can we give our lives for our children? Cf. thought experiment of man about to be hit by a truck.

Implications for Fathers Today

  1. A Present Father

  2. A Praying Father

  3. A “Prodigal” Father – in Tim Keller’s book, The Prodigal God, based on the Parable of the Prodigal Son, it speaks about God’s radical love that reaches out to both the irreligious and rebellious. Fathers are challenged to show God’s amazing love to their family, including their children, not to exasperate and bully them, but to love them into the kingdom.
